ENG 9: Argument Paper Outline

Choose an argument that you would like to research.  Choose something that you are PASSIONATE about -- if you don't care about the topic, you won't argue well!

You can copy & paste the following questions into a Word document, answer them, add your name, & print a copy for Miss Livezey.  This is called your TOPIC SUBMISSION.
  1. What are you arguing for/against?  In other words, what is your claim?
  2. Why are you arguing for/against this topic?  In other words, why does this interest you?
  3. Find 3 DIFFERENT SUPPORTING POINTS for your side of the argument.
    1. Point one:
    2. Point two:
    3. Point three:
  4. What is the opposing side of the argument?  How will you shut the argument down?
Save this document as yourlastname.yourfirstname.livezey.ARGTOP

When you are done, you can research sources for support.  You should be able to google any one of your three points & find information.  If you are having trouble finding information, this may be a sign that your topic is not going to work!

Any questions?  Ask your immediate neighbors (left & right of you) first, then ask me.  If it's something I've already answered, you may want to proceed with caution.

Make good use of your time!  If you get off task, you will be pulled off the computer & you will have to hand write your argument.

These are the requirements for your paper:

  • 5 paragraphs.
  • An INTERESTING argument that can come to stasis.
  • Claim presented in the first paragraph.
  • 3 supporting details (from sources).
  • 1 quote (from a source).
  • Conclusion summarizes the argument & leaves me something to think about!
