College Comparison

By the end of today, you will have a print out of the following:
  1. Your TOP 3 college choices.
  2. A rough draft of your Common Application Essay response.
Both items are due to me by the end of the block, stapled with your name on top.

FIRST ITEM OF BUSINESS: Today you'll be finding 3 colleges that fit your criteria (based on major, cost, career, etc.).  Start here -- if you have no idea what you're looking for, I still want you to go to that site because they have a "I'm not sure where to start" option that will help you!

After you get an idea of 3 colleges you'd like to pursue, I want you to compile them -- using this link, add your three colleges and click the print icon at the top.

SECOND ITEM OF BUSINESS: You will be working on a college application essay as your Writing Wednesday exercise.  Nothing says "COLLEGE READINESS" like a Writing Wednesday centered around a college application essay!

Choose ONE of the prompts below and respond with a 4 paragraph ACES essay.  If you need help/inspiration, go HERE.

PROMPT #1: Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

PROMPT #2: The lessons we take from failure can be fundamental to later success. Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

PROMPT #3: Reflect on a time when you challenged a belief or idea. What prompted you to act? Would you make the same decision again?

PROMPT #4: Describe a problem you’ve solved or a problem you’d like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma-anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.

PROMPT #5: Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transition from childhood to adulthood within your culture, community, or family.

Your rough draft is due TODAY.  Your second draft is due NEXT WEDNESDAY.
