Now that you are done your Unit 2 Assessment, you must type your Frederick Douglass argument.
You are defending Frederick Douglass – remember that he is on trial for striking a black man. There’s a good chance that if he is found guilty, he will be killed. DO A GOOD JOB.
1st Paragraph
- Hook to grab the reader’s attention.
- Background information on who Frederick Douglass is and a short summary of what happened with Mr. Covey.
- Directly say WHAT he is being accused of THEN state your claim (is he innocent) – don’t tell why YET.
2nd Paragraph
- Transition sentence.
- Restate your claim.
- Give your 2 reasons WHY your claim is right – one of these should be a rhetorical appeal!
- (1 of these reasons should be supported by EVIDENCE from the text).
- LIST YOUR EVIDENCE HERE.
- Restate your claim (BE CREATIVE – SAY IT IN A NEW WAY).
3rd Paragraph
- Transition sentence.
- Identify counterclaim: “The prosecution will say…” (say what Covey’s lawyer would say).
- REFUTE the counterclaim
- RESTATE YOUR CLAIM/CLOSING STATEMENT.
